1
Mixed numbers have a whole number as well as a fraction. When the numerator of a fraction is bigger than the denominator of the fraction it is called improper.
2
AAny fraction that has the same numerator and denominator is equal to 1. 44/4 =1 12/12= 1 100/100=1 YYou can “borrow” 1 to make it into fraction form to add or subtract, as long as the denominators are the same!
3
WWe can change the 1 into the fraction 4/4. WWe subtract the numerators and the denominator stays the same
5
M-multiply A-add D-denominator stays the same
6
MMultiply the denominator by the whole number:
7
Add your answer to the multiply step to the numerator.
8
New numerator after “getting MAD” Keep the denominator the same:
9
MM- 3 x 4 = 12 AA- 12 + 2 = 14 (new numerator) DD- denominator stays the same
10
Remember the fraction bar means divide! We divide the denominator into the numerator. He remainder is the new numerator and the denominator stays the same.
