1 Who are the clinical staff in HNE Health working in diabetes? A presentation at the 5 August Diabetes Medical Workshop Margaret Lewis

Who works where? Within HNE Health, diabetes services are community based with the level of service varying across and within clusters: –Diabetes-dedicated services range from integrated, multi-disciplinary services to those conducted by part-time (and sometimes sole) clinicians. –Generalist and specialist staff also care for people with diabetes, but are not funded by diabetes services.

Staff Specialists & Consultants Newcastle - 2.3 (FTE) Endocrinologists: Drs Arif Alam, Sham Acharya, Kerry Bowen and Tuan Quach, and a visiting consultant funded by GNC Diabetes. In addition, Drs Tom Donnelly and Geoff Eather are funded by the Department of Medicine. Tamworth - 0.4 (FTE) Endocrinologist and 2 visiting consultants. Dr Steve May - Nephrologist, Director of the Tamworth Centre.

Other medical staff Registrars - 3 in Newcastle, shared with Department of Medicine – total of 1.5 (FTE). CMOs - GP Attachment Program in Newcastle – total of 0.7 (FTE). Ophthalmologists - access for patients to JHH specialists and 2 visiting specialists in Tamworth.

Diabetes educators (Nursing) GNC - 2.4 (FTE) CNCs, 1.0 (FTE) CNS, 3.1 (FTE) RNs and additional 0.8 (FTE) CNC and 0.3 (FTE) CNS at JHH funded by Dept of Medicine LH - 1.0 (FTE) CNC, 1.1 (FTE) RNs, and generalist UH - 1.0 (FTE) CNC, 1.6 (FTE) generalists LMNC - 2.0 (FTE) RNs Mehi - 0.9 (FTE) RN McIntyre - 1.0 (FTE) RN – nurse practitioner* Peel - 1.0 (FTE) CNCs, 2.0 (FTE) CNS Tablelands - 1.0 (FTE) RN Many of these nurses are Credentialled Diabetes Educators 10 nurses across these clusters have diabetes in their workload

Dietitians GNC - 3.0 (FTE) LH - 1.4 (FTE) and generalist dietetics staff UH - 0.5 (FTE) LMNC - 1.0 (FTE) Mehi - 0.5 (FTE) which is generalist dietetics McIntyre Peel - 1.0 (FTE) Tablelands 6 dietitians across these clusters have diabetes in their workload

Podiatrists High risk foot clinic JHH – 3.0 (FTE) podiatrists funded by GNC Diabetes, but service provided by about 3.0 (FTE) podiatrists – is accessed by patients area-wide. Some education/assessment is also provided by these clinicians as part of GNC Diabetes Programs. Other podiatry services provided by community podiatrists or by private practitioners. Unsure of assessments/treatments conducted by trained footcare nurses.
