WHAT IS A FLEXIBLE WORKFORCE Where a significant percentage of employees are on and temporary contracts rather then the vast majority being on permanent full-time contracts and/or where employees are and work wherever needed in the organisation. part-time multi-skilled Why was Santa's little helper depressed? Because he had low elf esteem.

ADVANTAGES Cost control- ensures that you are only paying for the elves you need, when you need them. Flexibility- Enables the business to deal with varying output while satisfying the workforce. Staff retention- Shows the workers you are committed; enabling you to foster a high quality, committed workforce. Guess Who?

DISADVANTAGES Legal loss of control over flexible workers Quality of flexible workforce depends upon quality of staffing and training systems of staffing firm Friction between core and flexible workers

CORE WORKERS Essential to the ongoing operations and success of the business. They have permanent full time contracts and are offered incentives to stay with the business. Typically tend to be managers and specialist technical staff.

PERIPHERAL WORKERS The employees who are seen as less significant to the ongoing success of the business. Likely to be part-time or on fixed-term contracts. In many cases, these employees are semi-skilled or un-skilled. THE ELVES THE REINDEER
