STUART MCLEAN BIOGRAPHY STUART MCLEAN IS A CANADIAN BORN RADIO BROADCASTER, BUT WAS ALSO A HUMOURIST, MONOLOGIST, AND AN AUTHOR. HE IS BEST KNOWN AS THE RADIO BROADCASTER FOR A BROADCAST ON CBC NEWS RADIO CALLED THE VINYL CAFÉ. OFTEN DESCRIBED AS A “STORY-TELLING COMIC”. KNOWN FOR HIS DISTINCTIVE VOICE AND HIS ABILITY TO ALTER HIS STORIES TO MAKE THEM VERY CLEAR/DISTINCTIVE ON EVERY SHOW.

EARLY LIFE Born in Montreal to Australian immigrant parents. Was educated at Lower Canada College in Montreal Graduated from Sir George Williams University with a B.A. degree in 1971.

CAREER From 1978-1982, he made documentaries for a program called Sunday Morning on CBC Radio. He acted as the show’s (Sunday Morning) executive producer from 1982 to 1984. During the 80’s and 90’s he was a frequent guest and sometimes host of Morningside with Peter Gzowski. He had an opportunity to cohost the show Midday with Valerie Pringle of CBC Television in 1989, but the spot went to Ralph Benmergui. As a summer replacement show, he created The Vinyl Café in 1994. By the autumn of 1997, The Vinyl Café was being broadcasted every Sunday at noon. Since 1998, McLean has taken The Vinyl Café on the road to theatres in Canada and the United States.

AWARDS ACTRA award for best radio documentary for coverage of the Johnstown Massacre, 1979. Canadian Authors Association best non-fiction book for Welcome Home, 1993. Rookie fellowship for Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Writing: Trent University, 1994-95. Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour “Home from Vinyl Café”, 1999. Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour “Vinyl Café Unplugged”, 2001. Canadian Author’s Jubilee Award, for “Vinyl Café Diaries”, 2004. Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour “Secrets from the Vinyl Café”, 2007. In 2011, he was made an officer of the Order of Canada “for his contributions to Canadian culture as a storyteller and broadcaster, as well as for his many charitable activities”.
