13 A Vacation to Remember It was 2001 and I am a middle schools student. It is the first time I leave Korea. I go to Japan with my parents and siblings. Everything is so different. We arrive at the airport early in the morning. We check in and go through security and immigration in no time. I remember all the different types of people in the airport. There aren’t many people from other countries living in Korea in 2002 so I am stunned by how many unique faces I see. My parents buy me a present to keep me busy on the plane. Last vacation we take a trip to Busan I fight and hit my siblings a lot. The presents keep us from fighting. Our plane land in Tokyo and I hear this strange language in the terminal. It is Japanese. I look at the other Japanese girls my age. They have their own sense of fashion. I can tell they’re not Korean. Huge neon signs flash all sorts of words. I do not know what they mean. I am captivated by the strange spelling and the people walking on the sidewalks. I realize I am no longer in Korea. A sense of fear and curiosity hits me. We get to our hotel and I immediately occupy my side of the bed where I spread my clothes so my sister doesn’t take it. I let her have the right side while I take the left side. When I am young I care about which side I sleep on. Now I don’t care. I stare out the window. I take in the vastness of Tokyo and its strange sights. I look forward to telling my friends back home about my new adventure.
