ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM G9 ALPHA and DELTA – 2011 Mr. ARNOLD, R
2
Electrochemical Cells Current is produced through a chemical reaction; An electrolyte interacts chemically with the electrodes, separating charges and producing a flow of electrons from the (-) to the (+) terminal.
3
Primary and Storage Cells Primary Cells – Wet Cells: The electrolyte is a liquid; – Dry Cells: The electrolyte is a solid paste
4
Primary and Storage Cells Storage Cells (aka secondary or rechargeable) – When current is being produced it is said the cell is being discharged; – When the engine is working, an alternator produces current and sends it back to the cell, recharging it.
6
Solar Cells (aka Photovoltaic cell) Materials such as silicon are able to absorb energy from the sun or other sources of light and the give off electrons, producing electric current.
