1930-s Great Depression led to huge unemployment and population unhappy with elected governments Rise of communism and socialist views Inspired by the Soviet Union Socialism gained support amongst the poor and working class

A reaction to rise of socialism and weak governments fascist groups began to take power( Germany & Italy) Very conservative and loyalty was to the nation

1931- there was no support for Spanish Monarchy Elections brought Manuel Azana to power start of the Second Spanish Republic Center left politically His changes: split church and state Pushed collective & co-operatives (group of people own and work a property together and share profits) Reduce military influence

Both extreme left and right wing were unhappy -Still high poverty rate -worker strikes – felt gov needed to do more for the poor 1932- general (right wing) led a small revolt but was crushed 1933 Election saw increase in right wing support Results were denounced Spanish people lost faith in democracy

1936- popular front teamed all the left wing parties under one This ensured winning elections They feared power of the right wing ( seen in Germany and Italy 1936 Left wing views gained control of government

As soon as popular front took power plans for a coup started Coup is initiated in Morocco July of 1936 Unsuccessful in industrial areas like Madrid. ½ of the army was loyal to the government
