Bell-Ringer School Day: 20 September 9 th, 2015 1. a) -9 -6 = b) 42 ÷ -7 = 2. a) 5 3 = b) Expand each of the following: 3.

Let’s watch this video: Powers (Math Song)

Scientific Notation 3.5 x 10 4 and 7.4 x 10 -5 When a number is in Scientific Notation, it is written as a product of a decimal number and a power of 10. A power is simply a number with an exponent so a power of 10 means 10 raised to an exponent. The exponent can be positive or negative, so we need to understand what it means when an exponent is negative.

Composition Notebook Go to the Table of Contents Add page 2.F: “Zero & Negative Exponents”
5
What I know about negative exponents: I can write a term with a negative exponent as a fraction with a 1 in the numerator the base number with the opposite value of the exponent in the denominator Light Bulb
6
Let’s watch a video: Powers
7
Explain what the exponent means? 5 3 = 5 * 5 * 5 = 125 10 2 = 10 * 10 = 100 8 4 = 8 * 8 * 8 * 8 = 4096
8
What do you think it means when an exponent is negative? 5 -3 = 10 -2 =
9
What does 2 -1 Mean? You cannot leave an exponent negative because there is no way to express it’s meaning. You must make it positive !
10
Zero and Negative Exponents Zero and negative exponents are too easy. DEFINITION OF NEGATIVE EXPONENTS a -n is the reciprocal of a n. where a is not equal to 0.
11
Simplify. A negative exponent is an inverse! Flip the number over to make the exponent positive!
12
Follow the Pattern! 10 1 = 10 2 = 10 3 = 10 4 = 10 5 = 100 1,000 10,000 100,000 1010 10 1 10 = 0.1 10 -2 1 1 10 2 1 100 = 0.01 10 -3 1 10 3 1 1000 = 0.001

Zero and Negative Exponents Zero and negative exponents are too easy. DEFINITION OF ZERO EXPONENTS A nonzero number to the zero power has the value of ONE. ANY NUMBER (except zero!) RAISED TO THE ZERO POWER IS ONE!!!! a 0 = 1, where a is not equal to 0. 5 0 = 1 97 0 = 1 1,000,000 0 = 1 1,567 0 = 1 765 0 = 1 8 0 = 1100 0 = 1 -22 0 = 1 -4 0 = 1-9 0 = 1 1987 0 = 1 22.879 0 = 1 300 0 = 1

14 Negative Exponent: Examples Example of Negative Exponent in the Numerator: The negative exponent is in the numerator — to make it positive, I “flipped” it to the denominator.

Negative Exponent: Examples Negative Exponent in the Denominator: The negative exponent is in the denominator, so I “flipped” it to the numerator to make the exponent positive.
