Notes # 10 Carpetbaggers and a mule

Carpetbaggers Northerners who traveled down south after the Civil War. Some of these “Carpetbaggers” went to the south to help the people there, like teachers, and others who wanted to help the freed slaves. Other carpetbaggers saw that they could take advantage of the weakened south. This gave most northerners a bad name, and today Carpetbaggers represent people who are greedy and take advantage of others.

Scalawag’s A term used by southerners to refer to their fellow southerners that helped the Union during Reconstruction Scalawags were thought of as traitors to the south.

Freedman's Bureau Established in 1865 by Congress. It was meant to help not only freed slaves, but also poor white southerners as well. Some of its services were in donating food, providing hospitals and also legal services.

Freedman's Bureau It also set up government funded schools and colleges, which though already in the south, were very poor than compared to northern schools. It also included freed slaves as well in the educational process. It also attempted to give freed slaves land that was either confiscated or abandoned during the war. This was called “40 acres and a mule” for the Bureau promised to give every freed slave family just that to help them be independent.

Freedman's Bureau However, due to a lack of funding, and a majority of southerners disliking the Bureau, its activities were ceased in 1872.

On a separate sheet of paper Give an example of a carpetbagger, what would your example be doing in the south? Give an example of a Scalawag, what would your example be doing in the south? Why do you think that many southerners were against the Freedman’s bureau? Do you agree or disagree with the Bureau?
