3 Disagreements Divide the Country The north believed that slavery is wrong The south believed that slavery is right

4 *many people lived near factories in the north *republicans wanted no slavery in the west *in 1861 the confederate states were formed *lots of industry in the north *the south was agricultural *the south wanted the west to be slave states *the south wanted to depart Into a new country *two important issues increased tensions between the north and the south they were states rights and slavery and many southerners believed that states should have a final authority over the federal government

5 *northerners believed that the federal government should have a final authority over the states Slavery was a cultural and economic issue slaves were used to plant and harvest on farms. Northerners wanted to abolish slavery because they thought it was wrong. Southerners resisted saying that the abolition of slavery would destroy their regions economy.
