1
Fire Safety By Alicia Civile and Alexandra Fernandez ASSIGNMENT 4
2
Observations Outside the Chapman Building The Chapman building is surrounded by open landscape or groundscape on all 4 sides, which provides ample amount of space for occupants to flee to during a fire. It is important that these spaces be completely safe for occupants while waiting for assistance.
3
Observations Exterior Exterior sidewalk Parking Lot Sidewalk, street & green space open courtyard Green space
4
Observations Exterior Main entrance to building leading to one of the surrounding exterior open space
5
Observations Outside the Chapman Building This is the Northwest exit of the building that leads to the student and faculty parking lot. This exterior stairwell is at the end of the 2 nd floor arcade, which also connects to other building. This is one of the 4 options of exterior stairs. This is the west side of building and entrance, which leads to a large green space. This is the main option for all occupants on this side of the building.
6
Observations Outside the Chapman Building This is the Southside of the Chapman building that leads to a large exterior green courtyard that would be the safest and largest space of all 4 sides. It is situated away from streets and moving cars. One out of the 4 exterior stairwells is located here as well, at the southwest corner. Includes exits on first and second floor.
7
Observations Central Exterior Space Middle of Chapman building has a large courtyard which is a quick and efficient option for evacuating the building. Majority of building rooms face this main courtyard, or at least have an easy access route to it. The exterior exits for all public rooms on 1 st floor, lead to the courtyard. For all rooms on the 2 nd floor you will need to find one of the corner stairwells to evacuate to this courtyard.
8
Observations Central Exterior Space
9
Observations Exterior Exits Entire second floor has an exterior arcade that connects all the rooms At each end of the arcade is a main exterior stairwell that is used for evacuation
10
Observations Exterior Exits If rooms are not facing the arcade, they lead to a vestibule. All vestibules have glass doors and windows that provide visibility to outside. All doors of vestibules have proper illuminated exit signage and easy push doors.
11
Observations Doors All doors, interior and exterior have proper illuminated exit signage and easy push doors.
12
Observations Doors All doors swing open to the outside which allows occupants to safely flee in one direction. This is because if a fire does occur, and a panicked group piles up by the door it will simply swing open outside and no one can be trapped inside.
13
Observations Doors Easy push doors displaying swing to outside.
14
Observations Exterior Stairwells
15
Observations Exterior Stairwells The exterior stairwells of the arcade have to be of certain width in order to serve as emergency exits. It also depends on occupancy of the rooms; stair dimensions should correspond.
16
Observations Exterior Stairwells
17
Observations Horizontal Exits The Chapman Building Complex is composed of 2 separate building components. The exterior arcades, of each “separate component,” is connected by a horizontal outdoor corridor. These horizontal corridors serve as same level exit access in case of emergency. For example, if a fire strikes in the 2 nd floor of one of the components and you are not by one of the corner outdoor stairwells you can escape to the next adjacent component through use of the horizontal exterior space(corridors and arcade).
18
Observations Horizontal Exits The horizontal corridor between both building components.
19
Observations Vertical Openings The vertical opening enclosures serve to delay the spread of fire, such as stairwells and elevators. Required to be enclosed with fire-rated walls Must include self closing fire rated doors on each floor
20
Observations Vertical Openings The only vertical enclosures that are to be used during a fire are the stairs.
21
Observations Fire Alarm Systems Manual pull stations are present in case fire is noticed prior to system detection. They are found on exterior and interior of the building.
22
Observations Fire Alarm Systems
23
Observations Smoke Detectors Prevent death from smoke and poisonous gas inhalation. Can all be found along the ceiling of the Chapman building.
24
Observations Fire Extinguishers Stop small fires at their source within 75’ of occupant.
25
User Profile Page Users of the Chapman building include students, faculty, maintenance workers, and janitorial staff all of which are there to some extent on a daily basis. Students and faculty are there for extended hours during classes, study sessions, and meetings. This includes both day and night occupancy. Maintenance workers are there for extended hours when a repair or extensive maintenance work is needed, such as system repairs. The janitorial staff maintains the Chapman building when the rooms are not in use. The maintenance staff interacts with the fire safety system only if a repair or testing is needed. Students, faculty, and janitorial staff interact with fire exits and stairs on a daily basis. Other fire safety components such as fire extinguishers would only be used if a fire emergency was taking place.
26
User Profile Page Main entrance lobby includes a long work area that serves as a quiet study space for students and faculty. This is the main meeting and greeting area of the Chapman building.
27
User Profile Page Because this is the main area of the building and there are plenty of people here, there are a number of doors that lead to an out- door area adjacent to this long study area.
