2 Our Vision To make Leicestershire and Rutland the healthiest place in the UK Our mission: Improving health for all through excellence in partnership Our goals: Better health, better value, better care

3 Saving money in the new financial climate Looking at improving our quality and productivity This year 5.5% increase in our money from the government – we will receive £900 million, an increase of around £50 million After this, the NHS nationally will need to save £15-20 billion by 2014 Still need to commission (buy) best quality and value health services Whichever party wins the election, there will still be a public sector squeeze on funding

4 Areas for difficult decisions Areas where health problems are not life threatening but are high cost – an East Midlands wide approach Looking at whether some people are having treatments that don’t improve the condition – e.g. hip and knee replacements Encouraging people to take responsibility for their own health, e.g. by reducing intake of alcohol

5 National priorities – the same as last year Improving cleanliness and reducing health care associated infections Improving access through the 18 week target and better access to GPs (including evenings and weekends Keeping adults and children well, improving health and reducing health inequalities, particularly in: - Cancer - Stroke - Maternity and newborn care - Children (e.g. obesity, encouraging breastfeeding) Improving patient experience, and staff satisfaction and engagement Being ready for emergencies, such as pandemic flu
