Two Categories of Evaluation Informal – impromptu, unsystematic procedures Formal – systematic well-planned procedures

Evaluation “It is the only way to separate successful programs from those that are not; it is the driving force for planning new effective health promotion programs, improving existing programs, and demonstrating the results of resource investments.” (CDC, 1999)

Evaluation – determining the value or worth of the object of interest (the program) against a standard of acceptability

Process Evaluation Measurements during the program to control, assure or improve the quality of performance or delivery; daily EXAMPLE: measures times of programs, likeability of the speaker thru short questionnaires/focus groups

Impact Evaluation Immediate observable effects of a program, leading to the intended outcomes of a program; 1/2 way EXAMPLE: measures of awareness, knowledge, attitudes, skills, & behaviors

Outcome Evaluation Focuses on the ultimate goal or product of a program EXAMPLE: morbidity/mortality stats, vital measures, symptoms, signs
