4 Main Types Rhizopus - one of the most common and fastest growing. The black fuzzy mold, as it is more commonly known, also causes rotting of fruits and some infections of humans. Neurospora - the red bread mould Neurospora crassa is one of the most important fungal species used by biologists in many science experiments. Penicillium - when growing on bread, it appears as blue-green to gray fuzzy patches with white borders. Asperillus - looks similar to Penicillium to the eye, but both are different when examined under a microscope. Aspergillus mold fine hairs contain large balloons with spores inside.
