2. Uses for Fungi Cheese A lot of semi-soft cheeses like Bleu and Stilton are grown with veins of blue mold running through them. This mold changes the flavor in ways that many people like and is harmless in terms of health.

3. Uses for Fungi Medicine Most of you are familiar with penicillin – a type of mold that’s very well know as an antibiotic. Taken in the right way, penicillin can fight off and kill many bacterial infections and save lives. Since the discovery of penicillin, we’ve created many other antibiotics, many from fungi.

4. Uses for Fungi Fermentation When people hear about fermentation, they often jump to the conclusion that we’re talking about wine and beer. But fermentation is also responsible for bread, pickling, yogurt, olives, and cheese. Fermentation can be caused by both fungi and bacteria.

5. Uses for Fungi Reforestation As we saw in our video the other day, fungi can pair with plants to create a very beneficial symbiotic relationship. The two organisms can exchange nutrients that the other needs more, benefitting both. This is proving especially helpful in areas that we’re trying to reclaim from expanding deserts.
