Impact of Colonization

Why are we still talking about colonialism even though it’s been over for half a century? The process of decolonization was very disruptive. Some of the independence movements were quite violent, and you have the fallout from that politically, economically, and socially. The consequences of colonization differed from colony to colony. The following are general outcomes.

Politically Government was controlled by the colonizing power Africans not given opportunity to develop necessary skills decisions and policies had been made with little or no input from Africans

Politically Main goal of colonial governments was keeping order more money spent on police force than on infrastructure and education, housing, and health care combined Unstable, corrupt, and dictatorial governments

Economically Conflict and unrest have caused economic instability Resources are used to fight wars and provide humanitarian assistance

Economically African economies and infrastructure were based on exports Cash crops have taken land that could be used for producing food for the region Africa is the world’s poorest region and continues to fall further behind

Socially Boundaries forced rival ethnic groups together and separated compatible groups By favoring one ethnic group over another, colonizers created tension between groups At the beginning of colonialism, less than 5% of Africans were Christian, now nearly 50%

Socially Economic and political practices resulted in massive movement of people in most colonies this dislocation challenged social and cultural beliefs and practices families were often split up by migration

Socially Urbanization occurred rapidly in many colonies resulted in changes in economic activities and occupation, and in changes in the way people lived
