#1a Luddite Weavers and other skilled artisans who smashed machines and burned factories named after a folk hero Ned Ludd who legend said destroyed machines in the 1780s, these people opposed the machines doing their jobs!

#1b John Wesley 1703-1791 Minister in England who founded the Methodist church, stressed the need for a personal sense of faith, and urged Christians to improve their lives by adopting sober, moral ways.

#1c Methodism Religion developed in Industrial England that stressed forgiveness of sin and a better life to come, rekindled hope among working poor, took their message into the slums, set up Sunday schools not only to teach religion but also reading and writing. Helped to channel anger away from revolt and toward social change.

#2a Urbanization Movement of people to cities rapidly occurred as the industrial revolution took hold, and factories needed workers.

#2b Tenement Multistory buildings divided into crowded apartments, with no running water, only community pumps, and no sanitation.

#2c Labor Union Workers organization based on occupations, set out to make working conditions better and gain more pay for their members.
