Transportation Systems [ref]/[date©Thales 2010 1 In the Beginning … The SelTrac system concepts and techniques of communication-based Automatic Train Protection are from the LZB system used on mainline railways in Europe. These concepts were first adapted and proven in service for Urban Rail on the Berlin Line 4 in 1972. The first unmanned, CBTC train went into service in Vancouver, Canada in 1986.

Transportation Systems [ref]/[date©Thales 2010 4 Communications-Based Train Control Key benefits Increased capacity - Allows the safe, close operation of more trains on the same track Energy Safings – Increased automation allows for more precise control of train and ability to trade-off performance and energy usage against the current need of the railway Improved Safety – Automation reduces opportunities for human error. Reduced infrastructure investment Track Circuits Signals

Transportation Systems [ref]/[date©Thales 2010 5 Emerging Trends 1.Eliminate ‘fallback’ systems dependent on signals and track circuits or axle counters 2.Invest in ‘interoperable’ solutions. Interoperability Interchangeability Vehicle Interface 3.Evolving Standards IEEE IEC

Transportation Systems [ref]/[date©Thales 2010 6 Opportunities for the Indian Market Can an ‘Indian Market’ be created? To what extent can Indian Operators get together to agree on principles? Can operators agree on a specific, expandable, vehicle interface? Is it possible to create an independent certification body with a test track? Fault tolerant vs. Fallback? Making the leap of faith.
