NSF-funded Future of Computing Education Summit (FOCE) in June 2009 One of the action items from the summit: ◦ Establish a new organization/entity for computing education that would speak for computing education with one voice serve as an umbrella organization for a variety of efforts provide a central repository for resources recognize and celebrate achievements ◦ Owners: IEEE-CS, NCWIT, ACM Ed Board ◦ Convener: Tom Hilburn of IEEE-CS ◦ Participants: Ensemble, SIGCSE, CSTA, CRA, ASEE, SIGITE

Further discussion at the September 2009 Education Council meeting in Vancouver ◦ Key elements from the discussion: Skepticism regarding the need – ”is there a problem that nobody is working on?” or “what would this do that the existing organizations don’t already do?” Recognition that we are not working as a true computing education community – could this help? Recommendations regarding an issue and communication focused, slow start – need focus, need a “Grand Challenge” Recognition of the importance of champions with a passion

Ensemble group Strawhorse proposal discussion in December 2009 ◦ Coalition Coordinating Council Wooden Horse Proposal and Report to the FOCES organizing group in January 2010 ◦ Feedback: focus on coordinating, encouraging, and connecting Informal discussions throughout the Spring (e.g., SIGCSE)

Ongoing efforts to develop a proposal to NSF to fund the process of establishing the council Practical deadline in early July 2010 Project team: Tom Hilburn (chair), Heikki Topi, Jane Prey, Mark Guzdial

Project team will develop ◦ Draft Council charter ◦ Membership goals and expectations ◦ Strategic plan for broader launch ◦ Resource needs and potential funding sources Initial conversations regarding the draft with the leadership of a core group of societies involved in computing education Spring 2011 summit to finalize CECC formation and future plans

Present a unified, respected view of the nature, content, and achievements of computing education through an organization that is widely acknowledged to represent the entire field of computing Provide an ongoing sense of vision, purpose, and leadership in addressing the challenges to computing education Play a key role in setting educational priorities

Ongoing research and scholarship in computing education Improvement in pre-university computing education Increasing diversity in the populations of computing students, educators, and professionals Increasing numbers of students pursuing degrees in various fields of computing Improving the public understanding of computing professions Improving the public understanding of the relationship between computing and other disciplines
