4.4 Images in a Plane Mirror
2
Images in Plane Mirrors When you place an object in front of a mirror the light rays reflect off the object and some will reflect off of the mirror –This is according to the Law of Reflection
3
Images in Plane Mirrors This fools our brain because the brain “knows” that light travels in a straight line so your brain thinks the object is behind the mirror.
4
Ray Diagrams for Plane Mirrors Two rays reflecting from the mirror are needed to find the point where the reflection of an object is located –Object – the item in front of the mirror –Image – the reflection of the object in the mirror –Object distance – the distance from the object to the mirror –Image distance – the distance from the mirror to the image
5
Ray Diagrams for Plane Mirrors Because the image does not exist behind the mirror and only in our brains it is called a virtual image –Virtual images exist only when rays must be drawn backward to find where they meet.
6
Drawing Ray diagrams To draw the image of an object you need the location of at least 2 points on the object.
