Past tense The Past tense is used for actions complete in the past at a definite time. How a sentence is formed in the past tense, depends on whether the verb is a regular verb or an irregular verb. I finished my home work an hour ago. Now I am drawing. An hour ago PAST NOW FUTURE

Simple Past Form Regular verbs (‘ed/d’ is added to the base form of the verb) Affirmative – Subject + verb + ‘ed/d’ + ….. Ex. I finished my homework an hour ago. Negative – Subject + didn’t + verb + ….. Ex. I didn’t finish my homework. Interrogative – Did + subject + base form verb Ex. Did you finish your homework? Oh..I didn’t finish my home work Note Did you finish your home work?

Simple Past – Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs – These are verbs which have an irregular simple past form ( the past form cannot be created by simple adding an ‘ed/d’). Below are a few examples of irregular verbs. Base form Simple Past Base form Simple past Come Came Drink Drank Bring Brought Build Built See Saw Put Put Have Had Catch Caught Do Did Be Was/Were Note – Ask participants to list 6 verbs in all 3 forms – the base form verb, simple past and past participle

Form Affirmative – subject + past tense Ex. I saw him yesterday. Negative – subject + didn’t + base form verb + …. Ex. I didn’t see him yesterday. Interrogative – Did + subject + base form verb Ex. Did you see him yesterday? In negative sentences , in the past tense the main verb does not change

Simple Past - Usage The simple past is used in the following situations:- For a habitual action in the past Ex: When I was in college, I played football. When I was in college I played football. Simple Past - Usage For narratives – narrating stories, past events.
Ex. Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Goldilocks. She went for a walk in the forest. Pretty soon, she came upon a house. She knocked and, when no one answered, she walked right in. At the table in the kitchen, there were three bowls of porridge. Goldilocks was hungry. She tasted the porridge from the first bowl. Note – role play interviews for the past tense. Past Continuous Form Affirmative – subject + was/were + verb + ing
Ex. She was writing a letter last night, when the phone rang. Negative – subject + was/were + not + verb + ing Ex. I was not talking during the exam. Interrogative – was/were + subject + verb + ing Ex. Were you talking during the exam? Now

Past Continuous - Usage
For actions that were going on at a particular time in the past. Ex: It was raining when I went for a walk this morning. At eight, she was having her breakfast. 2. For actions that were going on when another action was going on at the same time. Ex: She was doing her home work while her sister was reading a book. Was happening at the same time NOW

3. For interrupted past actions Ex. While I was writing the , the computer suddenly shut down. PAST NOW My !! Oh God! My computer’s shut down! Hi Mary. While I was writing the , the computer shut down. Is it ok if I send the mail tomorrow?

Past Continuous - Usage
3. To express intention, as with the verbs “going to”, “intending to” etc Ex. She was planning to go to the circus, but she changed her mind. He was going to call the client, but he forgot what he wanted to say. Can you think of similar sentences? Use the following picture to help you frame the sentences

Omission of the verb ‘to be’ Ex. She listening to music Omission of the – ing Ex. They were listen to him. Use of – ing with stative verbs Ex. I was believing in God. Confusion with past simple Ex. I was watching a movie yesterday. Note – Play the Detective game -> Where were you yesterday at 10am? What were you doing after you had your lunch? Story telling using a combination of the past simple and past continuous.
