2. Catawba Indians
The Catawba Indians are a Native American tribe that resides on the border of North and South Carolina.

3. Catawba Indian Language
The Catawba Indians spoke their own native language, called Siouan. As of today, this language is no longer spoken, but some are working to learn the Siouan language again.

4. Men and Women Roles
The Catawba men were hunters and protectors of their family by fighting in wars. The Catawba women were in charge of the children, farming, and cooking. Both men and women took the role in leadership. They also both took part in art, storytelling, and medicine. There were both men and women Catawba chiefs, but mostly men.

5. Catawba Homes
The Catawba Indians lived in villages of homes that were made of wooden frames and bark walls. They also built circular buildings for town meetings.

6. Catawba Clothing
Catawba men wore deerskin breechcloths and leggings in the colder weather. Catawba women wore wraparound skirts and dresses. These dresses only covered one shoulder, leaving the other shoulder bare. They also wore ribbon skirts. Everyone wore moccasins on their feet. Moccasins are a type of slipper made of tanned leather.

7. Transportation
The Catawbas made canoes from hollowed-out logs. They did not have another type of transportation except for dogs. They used dogs to help them carry belongings.

8. Food
The Catawba men were the hunters. They hunted deer, turkeys, and other small animals. They also went fishing in local rivers. The Catawba women were the farmers. The harvested crops of corn, beans, and squash.
