Outline for data entry, management, and analysis class 1. Have students each enter one habitat sheet and one fish sheet 2. Look at all the different ways people entered data 3. Discuss what we will analyze or test...how does that change how we think about the data 4. Discuss proper data management and organization 5. Rework data into the proper form 6. Pull all data together and discuss error checking 7. Statistics review section
3
What metrics might we analyze from Black Earth Creek data This means you have to participate.....
4
Managing data can be a nightmare!
5
Database Creation Two main ways Spreadsheets – Microsoft Excel, Google Spreadsheet Databases – Microsoft Access, Oracle Everyone has their favorite program, but really both are fine if you understand proper data management
6
Understanding data data vs metadata ex. Digital camera data – picture metadata – settings of the camera data can be grouped How it is collected How it will be used
7
1. Design database layout and relationships. - Categorize data - Create ER diagram - Fill in column headings 2. Apply simulated (made up) data to the database and ensure questions can be answered I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! 3. Create the data entry forms and data sheets NOTE: AT THIS STEP WE HAVE NOT GONE INTO THE FIELD AND COLLECTED ANY DATA YET. Database Creation Spreadsheet or Database
8
ER DIAGRAM or ENTITY RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM
9
ER diagram for base of a stream trout database TABLES CONNECTIONS Location - Geographic Location - Habitat Sample – Ind.Fish Sample - Conditions Sample – Time/Date
10
Connections One To Many One To One
11
Brainstorm how we could categorize or break apart Black Earth Creek data This means you have to participate.....
