The World Chooses Sides - Israel Israel is supported by the U.S., Western Europe (such as Great Britain), and their allies The U.S. supplied Israel with weapons needed to fight the Palestinians and their Arab friends.

The World Chooses Sides – Arab States From the beginning of the conflict, the Arab World refused to acknowledge the existence of Israel and supported the Arab Palestinians. 1948: Arab-Israeli War The next day, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq invade Israel, but ultimately lose much of the land the U.N. had set aside for Arabs. Egypt is left in control of the Gaza Strip and Jordan takes over the West Bank. These territories make up about 25% of the total area of British Mandate Palestine

1967 Six-Day War Pre-emptive (preventative) strike against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan Lasts only six days! (June 5 th -11 th, 1967) Israel conquers the Gaza Strip and the Sinai from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan The territorial gains doubled the area of land controlled by Israel

1973: October War (Yom Kippur War) Surprise attack by Egypt and Syria in the Sinai and the Golan Heights on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism The war brings the United States and Soviet Union dangerously close to open confrontation Arab-dominated OPEC begin an oil embargo against Western nations that support Israel – especially the U.S. After early military gains, the Arab forces are driven back.

1978-79: Camp David Accords Camp David Accords – agreements between Israel and Egypt signed in 1978 that led to a peace treaty between those two countries in 1979 As part of the agreement, Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt and Egypt recognizes Israel’s right to exist Egyptian President Sadat, U.S. President Carter, and Israeli Prime Minister Begin sign the Israeli-Egyptian Peace Agreement
