10. How does your immune system work? # 1 – Your Skin Skin is a barrier to protect your body against pathogens. Pathogens are disease-causing agents (e.g. bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.). Enzymes in tears, mucous, and saliva can destroy microbes.
