Use the biology root words sheet to define the following words Mono- Di- Sacchar- Poly- Lipo- Macro- Micro-

Now lets define these words Monomer Polymer Monosaccharide Disaccharide Polysaccharide Lipid

Warm up: Copy down the EQ and I can statement for today and answer the following question; With the reoccurrence of radical diet trends such as mono-foods (eating a lot of one type of food i.e. broccoli) and no- carb diets many doctors have discouraged such diet practice, why do you think that is?

Important Biological Molecules Aims To know the names and uses of some important biological molecules. To understand the terms monomer & polymer

Can you think of any important molecules within living things?

Important Molecules: 1.Carbohydrates. 2. Proteins 3. Lipids 4. Nucleic Acids

Carbohydrates Carbohydrates = built from sugars Monomers= monosaccharides Polymers= Starches Function: used to store & supply energy and can be structural sugar – sugar – sugar – sugar – sugar – sugar

Quick Thinking Can you think of a vegetable that is sweet and forms a starch that you cook with?

Proteins Proteins = built from amino acids Monomers= amino acids Polymers= proteins Function=used for transport and structure; also the basic components of all enzymes, hormones, antibodies, haemoglobin, ribosomes, and many more materials

Quick Thinking What part of a chicken or cow do you eat?

Lipids Lipids = built from Fatty Acids Monomers= Fatty Acids Polymers= Lipids Function: part of cell membranes, insulators and protection, and also act as a minor energy supply

Quick Thinking What is the purpose of fat in the human body?

Nucleic Acids Nucleic acids (DNA) = built from nucleotides Monomers= Nucleotides Polymers= Nucleic Acids Function: Store genetic information and make proteins

Formation of Large Molecules Proteins and many carbohydrates are macromolecules. They are made of lots of smaller identical molecules (monomers) joined together to form a polymer. Carbohydrates =monosaccharide. Protein = amino acids

Warm Up Create a sentence for each group using the words in each set 1: Monosaccharide, Starch, carbohydrates, sugar. 2: Nucleic Acids, Polymer, DNA, Nucleotide 3: Fatty Acids, Oils, Lipids, 4: Proteins, Muscles, Amino Acids

Paint It Pretty You are an advertising executive being approached by companies wanting improve their image. Take a look at their product’s nutrition label, come up with the best strategy to market this product in the best light. Include the benefits of the product and try your best to make it healthy. While evaluating the products inclusion of each of the four biological molecules.
