Sustainable energy systems Sustainable energy technologies Sustainable energy sources ? COURSE TITLE: Sustainable Energy Technologies Definition
23
The term, sustainable development, was popularized in Our Common Future, a report published by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. Also known as the Brundtland report, Our Common Future included the “classic” definition of sustainable development: “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Definition Read more: http://www.worldbank.org/depweb/english/sd.html
24
It is generally accepted that sustainable development calls for a convergence between the three pillars of - economic development, - social equity, - environmental protection. Definition
25
better efficiency, better cost effectiveness, better use of energy resources, better environment, better energy security better sustainable development. 26
WHY SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES, ENERGY SOURCES AND SYSTEMS? Limited availability of fossil fuels and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions call for fundamental innovations in the global energy landscape (meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs). Sustainable energy and renewable energy technologies, such as bio-energy, solar energy, wind energy and hydrogen, play a key role in tackling these issues, especially given people’s determination to maintain or improve their living standards. Combined heat and power and cooling! – not always renewable, but sustainable. SUISTANABLE IS NOT ALWAYS EQUAL TO RENEWABLE Definition
