MUON Project Overview Action Items from September meeting New Action Items Update to the List of Worries Update of plans for the next 6 months.

Action Items from September meeting Define position of connections and electronics in BMS. –Status: still pending, although accessibility to spacer still available. Possibility to use the space around the ribs Design of BIR, BIM, BMF, BMS, BOG, BOF Supports and Installation Procedures. –Being done, with new Barrel Engineering team. BOF support has been design by MPI. BOG is being design by Freiburg. Evaluate the adjustment procedure for Barrel Brackets and installation of rails, to proceed to main order. –Done, changes have been made, rails follows the brackets to within 1mm. Order for brackets has been placed (no cost to the collaboration). Finalize rail design: –Done, tender is under way (possibility to obtain them at 50% cost) Start construction of Common RPC-MDT Supports. –Done for the first 4. Agreement has been signed with JINR for the full construction, including BML, BMS, BOL, EIL4 and EO supports. Positioning of alignment platforms: –Needs a procedure to calibrate or cross-check: PENDING

Worries related to chamber completion –Lack of Technical manpower and problems of panels fabrication to ensure timely delivery of RPC’s. Action item: hired Protvino manpower to ensure ramp-up to 3 chamber/day; ONGOING Action item: TC has made arrangements with Protvino to ensure timely delivery of panels, in exchange for Protvino manpower. –Outcome: production rate has strongly incresed, but it is not yet sufficient to ensure timely delivery of the chambers. –Very tight schedule in most sites for MDT service completion (see Gregor’s update), but it seems possible.

Financial worries Electronic items not fully covered: –High cost of Mezz-CSM cable: Still a problem. Some lower cost offer has been received from Italian firm. –High cost of Power supplies and cables: Cover power supplies by Italian funds, and try to get additional funds for the LV cables. –CSM (Chamber Service Module) was not part of original design. Michigan has done the design. Full cost has been included in the C-C, US part should be paid from US-MC. Italy, Germany, Holland have asked for the needed funding. It is not clear how to cover the Russian, Greek and Chinese parts. Could be cover with some of the C&I funds. Cash-flow problem could be covered by Resource Coordinator. –ROD crates for MDT (included in C-C, will depend on the contribution from the various funding agencies) Pending

Open issues for MUON Barrel Installation  Defining the routing of services and cable trays (ongoing).  Logistic aspects during installation: after platforms have been defined, need to workout every installation step (November 2003, with new Barrel Engineering Team)  Final Scenario for BIR, BIM installation  Installation time (has been confirmed following the 2003 test)  Understanding magnet deformations (pending).

Forthcoming events.. Prepare and start the chamber assembly and pre-testing before installation. Here we are going to find most of our problems. This is being postponed to the end of 2003, due to availability of components. Start preparation for Short-Term Commission of detector. For the End-Cap, this activity will be organized by Sandro, while Ludovico will start some activity for the Barrel –First program has been shown in the previous two talks. –Ludovico will prepare an organizational meeting for the Barrel institution around the December MUON week. Need to prepare MUON Spectrometer System Commissioning Group (MSSC), that will take us from sub-systems pre-commissioning to an Spectrometer commissioning. Such a group should include: –Commissioning Coordinator (proposals for names should be send to me during next two weeks). –2 Trigger experts from the RPC and TGC communities S. Veneziano, O. Sasaki) –4 ROD experts (from the 4 subsystems) (A. Konig, S. Pier ?, S. Venziano, L. Levinson) –1 Simulation Coordinator (C. Guyot) –2 Alignment experts (J. Bensinger, C. Guyot) – The MUON DIG representative (Speranza) –The two Short-Term Commissioning Coordinators (Sandro and Ludovico)

Proposed Meetings dates for 2004 23-25 February (ATLAS week) 26-28 April (with Engineering meeting) 21-23 June (ATLAS week, if not in Seattle) 13-15 September 13-15 December (with Engineering meeting)
