2 WHAT IS IT? Public architecture is the public buildings in Pompeii and Herculaneum. The best examples are the Forum, the Basilica and the layout of the towns themselves. The Forum included other public buildings such as temples, political and economic meeting places.

3 Why is it important? Public architecture is important because it shows us about the political, religious and economic characteristics of Roman society. They also reveal the development of Roman architecture

4 THE FORUM The Pompeiian forum was 137m by 47m and was surrounded by public buildings. The Forum is the place where: –Magistrates were elected –Religious ceremonies were conducted –People found out the latest news –Trade took place –Lawyers and doctors were hired –Gladitorial games were held until an amphitheatre was built

7 FEATURES OF THE FORUM The temple of Jupiter. Juno and Minerva on the North side The government buildings on the south side The Basilica on the west side As well as the suggestum – a platform for giving speeches The east side contained the macellum – a meat and fish market Imperial monuments were in the open area of the forum The temple of the public lares contained statues of the imperial family with a strong emphasis on the Genius of Augustus.

8 The forum was badly damages in 62AD and not much restoration had taken place by 79AD – only to the temple of Vespasian and temple of the Lares.
