1
How would I care for turf at a golf course?
2
Location/Original Characteristics The golf course that I want to take care of is located in Flandreau, SD. The course is 40 acres in size. The grass has nightly immobile irrigation in all areas The turf has heavy traffic
3
Greens Re-seed greens using creeping bent-grass Deep-tine greens for permeability and softness Brush in sand for added softness Aerate the greens monthly for nitrogen Mow them daily at 5/32” because bent grass will kill itself if you don’t cut it every day.
4
Roughs Apply herbicide every summer to kill thistles and dandelions. Mow at 2.5” every 3 to 4 days Pick up the sticks
5
Fairways Mow at 5/16” 2 times a week, Tuesdays and Fridays Apply fertilizer and herbicide in the spring Water nightly beginning at 9 o’clock
6
Mowers
7
Sand Traps Till with power tiller in the spring and fall Rake them every week Spray them to kill the grass seed Refill with sand every 2 years
8
Soil Charicteristics The soil characteristics are as follows Moderately coarse soil texture 10 – 12 inch deep soil depth The area is mostly flat but with elevated greens
9
Ground Preparation I would have to deep tine and aerate the lawns to reseed them. We don’t do much else with planting things out there.
10
Maintenance I would have to Water Mow Fertilize Apply pesticides
11
Irrigation We have an automatic irrigation system Money for the system came for the director board Water comes from the water table from the Big Sioux Water every night during the growing season except when it rains.
12
Conclusion This is how I would take care of the golf course, and how we do it already. The only thing I would change is how old most of our mowers are. A couple of them barely putt around. Anyway, that was our presentation and I hope you enjoyed it.
