Section 5-4
2
A pulley is a rope wrapped around a wheel. Pulleys can change the direction or the size of a force.
3
Fixed pulleys are pulleys with a wheel that does not move. They change the direction of the effort force. The effort force is equal to the resistance force so the MA is always equal to 1.
4
Movable pulleys are pulleys that increase the size of the effort force. When the rope is pulled up, the load and the pulley both move up. The MA is equal to the number of ropes that lift the resistance.
5
Block and tackle pulleys are systems made up of both fixed and movable pulleys. The pulleys are used together to increase the MA of the system which is equal to the number of supporting ropes.
