Author’s purpose is to inform & entertain the audience with stories about their entire life. Often begins with the author’s first memory about their life. Includes events significant to them or vivid in their memory. Memoirs Written about the author’s own life. Long-term type of story. Author’s purpose is to inform & entertain the audience by reflecting on many stories focusing on an aspect of their life or a life experience (event.) Begins at the moment of the first event or the time leading up to the first event. The lesson learned is embedded (included throughout) the whole piece. Personal Narratives Written about the author’s own life. Short-term type of story. Author’s purpose is to inform & entertain the audience with 1 story from their life. Tells one story about a memory from the author’s life. The last sentence or paragraph may share a life’s lesson. (Tacked on at the end.)

4 Mrs. Jacobson’s theme: Mrs. Jacobson’s theme: Becoming an equestrian has made me a more humble, compassionate, disciplined, & controlled person. Summaries of stories I’m sharing to support my theme of how becoming an equestrian has made me be a better person. 1.I ride with people much younger than me who are much better riders. 2.Jay was riding & saw me fell off. I had to get back on for his sake. 3.Mucking out stalls is no fun! 4.Dryers rattling. Ferrier’s sparks flying. Cars pulling up. People running/laughing/not watching where they are going. Riding is dangerous! This story supports my theme of how becoming an equestrian has made me be a better person by... 1.I have had to become humble and realize that I am going to work hard to get to the level of some of the younger riders. 2.I had to be compassionate toward Jay and get back on even though I REALLY did not want to. 3.I have to discipline myself to do this chore, because the horses sure aren’t going to muck them!!! 4.I have to control myself & my fears… being afraid is not going to serve me well in an emergency!

A- A-Adding (new ideas, including evidence etc.) R- R- Removing (anything off topic, that doesn’t support your theme, doesn’t make sense, is too wordy, etc.) M- M- Moving (the idea is good, it just doesn’t work best where it is. Cut & paste) S- S- Substituting (trade one idea for another. R+A=S {removing +adding = substituting.)

Completed Rough draft due WHEN YOU COME IN THE DOOR. You will receive a “0” for tomorrow’s class activity if your rough draft is not COMPLETE (From intro all the way through conclusion!) Homework: finish Revisions Wednesday: Homework: Wednesday: Self Revisions in class. Homework: Edit your piece (CUPS). Thursday: Thursday: Write final draft. It is due MONDAY. If you get finished, you may submit your piece today. Friday: Homework: Friday: Spelling Pre-test. Homework: Final Draft is due when you come in the door Monday!

8 Drafting/ Revising/ Editing Procedures We will be working on our memoirs in class this week. Here are some things you need to know: Each day, you may only come to see me twice: once to ask a revising question (ARMS) and once to ask an editing question (CUPS). It would be best if you could ask me these questions at the same time. So that ALL students have a chance to talk to me, and a few students are not monopolizing the time. This is to be fair to everyone. You may not ask me to read over your piece. Again, this would take up time that other students need to talk to me. Instead, come with one SPECIFIC question that you need answered or one PARAGRAPH that you’d like me to look at. (If you haven’t divided your piece into paragraphs yet, then reading a paragraph isn’t an option.) Tomorrow, your COMPLETED rough draft is due WHEN YOU COME IN THE DOOR. It may NOT have your name on it. There is a number on a post it on your desk. Your piece must ONLY have your number on it.
