3 Physical Activity and Your Health Physical Activity –Any form of movement that causes your body to use energy Benefits every system in your body and also benefits your mental/emotional and social health Teens should get 60 minutes a day of PA Physical fitness –The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands Exercise –Purposeful physical activity that is planned, structured, and repetitive, and that improves or maintains physical fitness

4 The Active Body Cardiovascular System –Strengthens the heart so it pumps more blood more efficiently –Reduces blood pressure –Lowers level of artery clogging cholesterol Respiratory System –Lungs begin to work more efficiently, pulling in larger amounts of air and increasing the amounts of oxygen to your body Musculoskeletal System –Strengthens muscles and bones –Improves balance and coordination

5 Mental and Emotional Benefits Stress Relief –Produce endorphins –Feeling of well-being, aids in relaxation, relieves physical pain Mood Enhancement –Natural mood lifter Better Sleep –At least 3 hours before bedtime helps you to relax Improved Self-Esteem –Look and feel your best

7 Risks of Being Inactive Sedentary –Involving little physical activity Health Risks of a Sedentary Lifestyle: –Unhealthful weight gain and obesity –Cardiovascular disease (heart attack & stroke) –Type 2 diabetes –Certain types of cancers –Asthma and other breathing problems –Osteoporosis (bones become porous and fragile) –Osteoarthritis (breakdown of cartilage and bone in the joints) –Psychological problems (stress, anxiety, depression) –Premature death
