Students will create SMART goals to achieve their career interests and understand the relationship between high school course work and career paths. Learning Objective

GOAL SETTING… provides direction and purpose. helps a person override distractions. is challenging hence increases a person’s work ethic and drive. provides accountability. ensures a person to live a life he/she envisions. increases a person’s self-esteem through accomplishment. Why is Goal Setting important?

STUDIES SHOW… approximately 80 % of people never set goals although most believe that goal setting is important to attain a better life… of the 20 % that do set goals, 70% fail to meet the goals they have set. Goal Setting Method: SMART goals

SPECIFIC: Create a goal and include What, Why, Who, and/or Where. MEASURABLE:How will I know I accomplished it? ATTAINABLE:Realistic steps to achieve the goal RELEVANT:Is it worth it? Is it the right time? How does it correlate to my long term goals? TIMELY:Set a timeline to accomplish the goal. Goal Setting Method 2: SMART goals

STEP 1: Write down your specific goal and where you are in achieving that goal. STEP 2: Identify and write down possible roadblocks (obstacles) that could get in your way of achieving the goal. STEP 3: Write down ways you can get through the possible roadblocks (solutions). STEP 4: Measureable-how will you know that you accomplished your goal? Goal Setting Method

STEP 5: Attainable/Timely-Identify and write down 5 or more attainable steps that you will have to take and a timeframe to achieve your goal. STEP 6:Relevance-Identify and write down a reward for achieving your goal. Step 7: Write a positive self-message that can act as a motivational tool throughout the goal setting process.
