MobiDAQ progress Paulo Vitor da Silva, Gerolf Schlager

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Introduction & Reminder Mobile DAQ test bench for commissioning of Tilecal in the pit Test up to 8 drawers simultaneously 2 main functionalities: –Standalone tests in “DVS” to test functionality of components –“play daq” for data taking (stability, cosmics,…) Critical manpower change: Paulo went back to Rio, now taken over by Andrea and from March 05 by Iacopo MobiDAQ team: Bob, Jim Pr., Paulo, Andrea, Iacopo, Jim S., Giorgi, Gerolf (and help from the rest of Tilecal)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Hardware Overview Now really standalone –CCTs + laptop setup as local network using a hub –boot CCTs via laptop –Not dependent on external network (AFS,…) Trigger modules added NIM crate providing external trigger (L1A) added

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Damaged power supplies Shipment of MobiDAQ power supplies arrived damaged 2 PS with problems –Short circuit + fire + smoke when plugged in 1 already repaired (  10 in hand)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Software play_daq Fully functional – can start runs and take data Andrea currently working on monitoring (see talk in TileCal Software meeting, 13.12.04) DVS So far all tests ready for DVS except CIS test Trigger test still needs some timing adjustments Feedback from experts wanted: how detailed do we want to test the components? (E.g.: now using tests from Ilya for ADC – not done in the 2 standalone testbenches)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) play_daq DAQ a la testbeam Readout through ODIN cards and sent to laptop (=ROS) using Ethernet Later possible reconstruction with Athena Can run during long periods to check stability Use online monitoring for checks –Summaries Pedestal & noise (from Francesco) –Timing info –Trigger tower vs. ∑(PMTs) Take cosmics data

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Standalone tests Name of test Communication via What is tested CANbusTTC test_canbus_interface X CANbus connection test_adc_interface X CANbus, 3in1 cards, ADC functionality test_integrator_interface X CANbus, ADC integrator test_ttc_interface XX TTC, CANbus, 3in1 cards test_trigger_interface XX TTC, CANbus, Trigger signal test_hv_channels X HV CANbus, HV orders & values test_hv_interface X HV CANbus drawer_pedestal X CRC, BCID, high frequency noise drawer_readout X CRC, BCID digi_read X Simple digitizer readout “HowTo” created on MobiDAQ webpage http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/SUB_DETECTORS/TILE/Commissioning/mobidaq/HowTo.htm http://atlas.web.cern.ch/Atlas/SUB_DETECTORS/TILE/Commissioning/mobidaq/HowTo.htm –Detailed description of tests and how to use them in standalone mode

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) DVS Tests now implemented in DVS framework Could be used for ATLAS Detailed test log DVS upgrade Jan05 –Verbose option Verbose ON –Full output Verbose OFF – Result only (Passed/Failed) –Full output if error occurs –Keep logs of previous tests –Logical sequence of tests (parallel or serial)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Work in the pit (1/1) The 3 D’s: Dirty, louD, Difficult Moved into pit end of October 1 st using the racks room (USA15) 8 sets temporary cables installed (TTC, GLINK, CANbus, Trigger) 8 power supplies installed Read out 7 drawers successfully (communication problem with 8 th drawer) Found 1 TTC fiber dead – now replaced Moved back to blg. 185 for LV experts week (real “Mobi” DAQ!)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Work in the pit (2/2) Temporary cables arriving at barrel Power supplies on fingers (Very difficult to manipulate cables & PS because of OPAL cradle – 20cm space!) OPAL cradle MobiDAQ power supplies

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) High frequency noise (high gain) with MobiDAQ power supplies (1/2) No ground connected to PSGround connected to PS Mean ~ 1.3 Mean ~ 1.7 No 3in1 Explanation Georges Blanchot: Ground loop is created through the grounding of the iron mass – but in pit the drawer was outside on a table and we saw the same problem

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) 3m cable1m cable High frequency noise (high gain) with MobiDAQ power supplies (2/2) Measurement with MobiDAQ Preliminary results – want to confirm them with Ahab since MobiDAQ is still in development state Noise seems significantly lower with shorter Harting cable (between PS and Drawer)

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Noise change using filter for PS With filterWithout filter PS was plugged into a commercial filter Result: No significant influence on noise observed

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Side-effects of MobiDAQ… Readout Buffer –Critical firmware bug discovered –Could be repaired by Barcelona TTCoc –Critical problems with optical output power of TTCoc –Not possible to use the current system in ATLAS

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) TTCoc – Problem description TTCex TTCoc (splitter 1:16) TileCal Modules Multimode Singlemode Attenuator VME crate Single mode laser source (TTCex) Multi mode system (TTCoc, fibres) Thanks to Belen for the help on this slide

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) TTCoc - Consequences Insertion loss from -17 up to -5 dB on the outputs of the same 1/16 coupler (specs -14dB) Signal timing very sensitive to any motion of the first multimode patch (between the laser and the TTCoc) Multimode attenuators not efficient because signal is not really a multimode signal Singlemode attenuator effect is ~x3 because of the diameter change Never discovered before because tests were not made with TTCex (= single mode source) Discovered with MobiDAQ Now working on solution Slide from Sophie Baron

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) TTCoc – Possible solutions Multimode (MM) source Mode scrambler on output of laser Figure 5: Mode scrambler from Newport Newport Price: 794 CHF. Slide from Sophie Baron Singlemode (SM) fibers up to TTCoc then: –SM2SM TTCoc + SM fibers to detector –SM2MM TTCoc + MM fibers to detector Evaluation in progress

Tilecal week / Dec 04Gerolf Schlager (Cern) Conclusions MobiDAQ is well on the way –Almost all standalone tests operational –Monitoring is being finished Continue development in Jan05 in blg 185 –CIS test –Trigger timing –DVS upgrade –Monitoring Then move to pit to start testing 8 drawers (hopefully with cooling and without OPAL cradle) Stability tests, cosmics or drawer functionality tests … schedule to be decided Further investigations of the noise with PS
