Review The coming of false teachers 2:1-3 The fate of false teachers 2:4-9 The character of false teachers 2:10-17 The victims of false teachers 2:18-22

The teaching of false teachers 3:1 "I now write" = "already" Apparently the urgency of the situation prompted Peter to write again so soon.

The teaching of false teachers 3:1 "arouse your minds to remember" It is not at all uncommon that the truths we need to know to meet life are not those which are new, but need to be remembered! "Arouse" = "awakening people who are asleep"

The teaching of false teachers 3:1 Their minds were "pure" but Peter didn't want them to be naive. The threat of the false teachers was real!

The teaching of false teachers 3:2 "that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of our Lord and Savior given by your apostles"

The teaching of false teachers 3:2 The Advent of Christ was prophesied in the OT and by both Christ and the Apostles.

The teaching of false teachers 3:2 The "commandment" would most naturally be to "watch" for His coming (Matthew 24:42; 25:13; Mark 13:33, 35, 37; Luke 21:36)

The teaching of false teachers 3:3 "knowing this" = "realizing this" They were aware that this truth would be mocked and needed to remember that....as we should!

The teaching of false teachers 3:3 When people mock the second coming, they are fulfilling prophecy!

The teaching of false teachers 3:4-5 And, since the mockers don't believe in His return, they walk "according to their own base desires". This is the danger believers face if they buy the lie.

The teaching of false teachers 3:5 It "escapes their notice" because they want it to. They deliberately ignore the testimony of Scripture that is clear on this.

The teaching of false teachers 3:5-6 Notice the connection to the flood and Jesus' second coming in Matt. 24:37-39. It would bring destruction and be unexpected.

The teaching of false teachers 3:5 "out of water" for clarity = "an earth that arose out of water"

The teaching of false teachers 3:5 "in the water" = "in the midst of water" The water canopy above, the waters around, and the waters below the earth.

The teaching of false teachers 3:6 God's creative word had brought about the water-encased world and also brought about its destruction.

The teaching of false teachers 3:7 That same word now preserves the world. Our world is not stable due to its inherent nature, but God's word.

The teaching of false teachers 3:7 There is a "treasuring up" of the cosmos for the judgment of fire. Considering the incomprehensible size of the universe, that's beyond amazing!

The teaching of false teachers 3:7 This might well be what we call "Judgment Day" Revelation 20:11-21:1

The teaching of false teachers 3:7 "The day for the judgment and ruin of ungodly men" = "the Day of the Lord" Begins with the rapture, ends with the final judgment.

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 "God does not experience the difference in the passage of a short period of time or a long one" Hodges

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 What is long or short to men is not long or short to God. God cannot be accused of "slowness".

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 Our problem often is judging God as the world seems to us.

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 "not willing that any should perish" His delay is an act of mercy!

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 Christ's apparent "delay" should be viewed in light of: (1) His relation to time itself, and (2) His compassion toward humanity.

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 Christ's coming will result in the near- extinction of humanity. God is not anxious to see that happen! Ezek. 18:23, 32

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 The concern for "repentance" is not the same as "being saved from hell"

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 The Scriptures are clear that God desires that people would be saved from hell 1 Tim. 2:4-5; John 3:16; 2 Cor. 5:19-20

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 If men would repent, the Day of the Lord would be avoided. Example: Jonah 3:1-10, esp. 4-5 Later, overthrown in 612 B.C.

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 God desires world-wide repentance! Illustrated by Jeremiah 18:7-11

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 Repentance is an act whereby we get right with God in order to avoid temporal judgment.

The teaching of false teachers 3:8-9 A summary of God's desires: (1) God does not want any (individuals) to perish, and (2) He does want all (people) to come to repentance.
