7
M AKING C ONNECTIONS – L IBRARY STAFF ILS OCLC / ILS control number linking ILS bibliographic record OCLC system control number (Marc 035) – consistent data format Eight digits for Voyager indexing; add leading zeros Consistent prefix; for example: (OCoLC)ocm or ocn Add OCLC control numbers to ILS bibliographic records without Identify mis-linked records and correct linking Item records necessary for correct WorldCat Local displays
8
M AKING C ONNECTIONS – L IBRARY STAFF Listen and take action on staff suggestions and comments ILS “Boise State University” added to URL (856) to visually identify which is local online link (MarcEdit) “Online” prefix (holdings 852, $k) added to all eResources

M AKING CONNECTIONS WITH S TUDENTS On-shelf holds for students a new service with WorldCat Local (on-shelf delivery to faculty offices started fall 2006) Seamless ILL access – auto-populates form Common scenario Student – “absolutely nothing on my research topic” Librarian – “let’s see what we can find” (in-person or email) Go to WorldCat Local Search Select books and other resources Make list Email list to student – “there is something” Librarian embedded with McNair Scholars Program (program prepares underrepresented and students from low-income backgrounds for graduate study) Demo on creating book lists Export records from WorldCat Local to desktop (or flash drive) and from desktop import into EndNote Web
21
MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH STUDENTS – TWITTER
22
MAKING CONNECTIONS – INSTRUCTION Instruction handout WorldCat Local – New interface Single search to find resources Example search Results display in tiers Sort by: location & relevance default; other options – date, author Facets to refine results list View All Editions Use Hold/Request – BroncoWeb username and password needed to request on shelf hold Find It button (link resolver) Request item through Interlibrary Loan (borrow from other library) – ILL form auto-populates details Cite/Export Function
23
MAKING CONNECTIONS WITH STUDENTS USE WORLDCAT LOCAL LISTS TO CREATE BIBLIOGRAPHIES USE NEW BOOKS LIST TO CREATE FEED FOR LIBRARY GUIDE
24
WORLDCAT LOCAL – CHALLENGES Known item searching View All Editions button – FRBR (library staff confused; almost impossible to explain to users) View Item Details button – displays call number but user expectation that will lead to more bibliographic information (Upgrade suggestion: Show Call Number) Monthly upgrade schedule resulted in constantly revising instruction lectures and handouts (April 16 OCLC announced change to quarterly installs) Upgrades sometimes result in existing (liked) functionality or features disappearing – ERIC document numbers (local test record file) Planned for ILL work increase – unexpectedly flooded with popular video requests Increased ILL monitoring – request for 19 th century original instead of reprint
25
M AKING C ONNECTIONS – U SER S URVEYS Two user surveys conducted Survey popped-up after user in WorldCat Local four minutes Five survey questions 1 – Which is your primary library? 2 – How would you rate your search experience? 3 – Were you happy with your search results? 4 – How would you rate the search interface? 5 – [Comments]
