3 Patterns There are three basic patterns of development. 1.Head to foot 2.Near to far 3.Simple to complex

4 Head to foot In the womb the head grows first Arms and legs follow the head Newborns first learn to look, then touch, then walk

5 Near to Far First babies use their whole body Then they use their arms Then they use hands and fingers

6 Simple to Complex Babies develop from completing complicated tasks to more involved. Eg. Being feed – eating with fingers and holding a bottle – using spoon, fork and sippy cup.

7 Growth and Development Growth and development among everyone is individual. Growth and development charts show averages only.

8 Weight Weight gain shows a healthy baby Weight loss at birth 0-6months average weight gain of 1-2 lbs per month. 6-12months average weight gain of 1 lb per month. Average weight of 1 year old 20-22 lbs

9 Height Average height/ length of newborn 20” or 51 cm Average height of 12 month old 30” in or 76 cm Heredity

10 Proportion- a size relationship A baby head is much larger in proportion to the rest of its body The baby develops ½ the full grown size of the head in the first year

11 Sight Minimal sight development in the womb Lack of muscles: focusing, blinking, eye movement. Sight almost fully developed at 3 ½ months.

12 Depth Perception Not fully developed until 3 months

13 Eye – Hand Coordination Gradual Not complete until later in childhood Grasp? Or Eye hand coordination

14 Hearing Develops in the womb By birth a baby can following sound Responds to tones not words Hearing important to language development Hearing test recommended at birth

15 When to be Concerned about Hearing Not startled by loud noises Does not turn to sounds Not awakened by loud noises Does not respond when called Pays no attention to ordinary sounds

16 Smell Little sense of smell at birth At first only strong odors After ten days may be able to distinguish between mother’s smell and other people.

17 taste Develops quickly Can distinguish between milk, sour, water, sugar, and salt. Very dependant on smell

18 Voice Cry Changes from use of voice and growth of throat muscles, tongue, lips, teeth, and vocal cords. Speech is dependant on Physical development many babies physically ready for words at 12 months, but may not speak for many months,
