Poetry Terms A few explained…

parallelism The ideas expressed are nearly synonymous in meaning and are of equal force. The expressions in parallel have the same tone, i.e., they are either both negative or positive. The order of the words, or structure of the sentence parts is similar.

Which of the following is parallel? Mary had a little lamb; its fleece was white as snow… Or Mary had a little lamb; its fleece being white as snow…

Right! Mary had a little lamb; its fleece was white as snow… Both verbs are past tense, providing parallel sentence structure.

oxymoron … a phrase in which two words of contradictory meaning are used together for special effect, e.g. "wise fool" or "legal murder"

hyperbole … deliberate and obvious exaggeration used for effect, e.g. "My backpack weighs a ton!"

onomatopoeia …the formation or use of words that imitate the sound associated with something, e.g. "hiss" and "buzz"

Prose …writing or speech in its normal continuous form, without the rhythmic or visual line structure of poetry About "Because I could not stop for Death (712)" In a letter to Abiah Root, Dickinson once asked, "Does not Eternity appear dreadful to you...I often get thinking of it and it seems so dark to me that I almost wish there was no Eternity. To think that we must forever live and never cease to be. It seems as if Death which all so dread because it launches us upon an unknown world would be a relief to so endless a state of existense."
