In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton the main characters grow up in the same neighborhood. Although they come from similar backgrounds they are not all alike. They have similarities and differences in personality and home life. Johnny and Ponyboy are best friends and partners in crime, but they don’t always see eye to eye. Johnny and Ponyboy, two characters from The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton are best friends. Introduction Include these 3 main points -Name of novel and author -Characters you are discussing -The fact that you will be comparing them

5 paragraphs 1) Introduction 2) Similarities 3) Differences- character 1 4) Differences – character 2 5) Conclusion

Differences Paragraph 3-4 Each of these paragraphs should have 2 character traits that you explain and describe. Each paragraph should have 1 or 2 quotes that you introduce and explain DO NOT end the paragraph with a quote.

Ponyboy is a unique character. Even though he comes from the wrong side of the tracks he is very intelligent. An example of this is when he says, “I’m supposed to be smart because I make good grades and have a high IQ and everything” (Hinton 4). He even skipped a grade and takes all advanced classes. His older brother Darry thinks he can get a college scholarship because his grades are so good. Pony is also sensitive. He shows his sensitive side when he talked to Cherry. He cares about things like sunsets, movies, books and poetry. When he watches a movies he gets really invested in the characters and their lives. He tries to put himself in their shoes. Most of the other greasers aren’t sensitive like Pony, and it’s one of the traits that makes him such a unique character.

How to Incorporate a Quote: DO NOT drop a quote into your paper You must INCORPORATE a quote into your paper so that the reader does not confuse the author’s thoughts with yours. It also helps the reader understand the purpose of the quote It is helpful to use the author’s name and perhaps title of the text in your incorporation

Examples For example, … This characteristic is highlighted when he/she says… An example of this would be… According to the novel… Hinton writes, … This is shown when Hinton writes… This is shown when he/she says…

How to Cite In Text After a quote you must provide a citation. If you use the author’s name in the incorporation it is only necessary for you to put page number at the end. Ex: “In The Outsiders, Hinton writes, …” (#). If there is no mention of the author, and it is the first time you are citing that author, write authors last name then page number. Ex: “This was shown when Darry…” (Hinton #). If the quote/citation directly before is the same author then you may only put page numbers as well. Ex: “This was shown when Dally…” (#).

Misc. The punctuation ALWAYS goes after the citation. – Correct: “Hinton writes … (#). – Incorrect: “Hinton writes …. (#) If the quote ends with a ? or an ! you put that after the citation. – Example: “Darry asked … (#)? Titles of books must be Italicized

To Cite or Not to Cite? Direct Quotations – WORD FOR WORD from the text. o Cite WITH page numbers Paraphrase – Rewording an event into your own words o Cite WITH page numbers Summary – Summarizing the entire book o Mention in the incorporation the title and author.

Conclusion: - Touch on the 2 characters you compared. -Make a comment on where their friendship stands at the end of the novel Throughout their lives Ponyboy and Johnny were always good friends. They may have had different personalities, but they were still loyal to one another to the end. Even though Johnny is no longer alive, Ponyboy will always remember him.

Get you rough draft out, and write this down EXACTLY as you see on the bottom of you rough draft Citation: Hinton, S. E. The Outsiders. New York: Viking, 1967. Print.

Editing Part 1 -Make sure you have no paragraphs that end in a quote. -Make sure you have at least 4 sentences to explain each character trait. -Highlight all punctuation (periods, commas) & look for run-ons -Highlight (different color) all conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so, because) Make sure you don’t repeat one of these too often. Make sure you do not start sentences with them. -Remove any “I”s in the paper; unless they are in quotes.
