The Reality Almost 10% (640,000) of children live in poverty. If poverty is measured against gross domestic income Where it exists B.C., Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan NS is ranked 6 th highest behind NFLD

Measuring Poverty Poverty is measured by the government three ways. 1.Low Income Cut Off (LICO) (Stats Can) 1. Spending 55% of family income on food, housing and clothing 2.Low Income Measure (LIM) 1. Is a relative (loose or arbitrary) measure 2. More than 50% on necessary items 3.Market Based Measure (MBM) 1. Measures poverty against the ability to meet basic needs

Impact Poverty among children includes many obvious and hidden costs. Poor nutrition – health issues, proper development Housing – re-occurring illness, family stress Impaired performance at school Low self esteem
