1 Warm Up 10-26- 2015 Evening Star Edgar Allen Poe 'Twas noontide of summer, And mid-time of night; And stars, in their orbits, Shone pale, thro' the light Of the brighter, cold moon, 'Mid planets her slaves, Herself in the Heavens, Her beam on the waves. I gazed awhile On her cold smile; Too cold- too cold for me- There pass'd, as a shroud, A fleecy cloud, And I turned away to thee, Proud Evening Star, In thy glory afar, And dearer thy beam shall be; For joy to my heart Is the proud part Thou bearest in Heaven at night, And more I admire Thy distant fire, Than that colder, lowly light. 1.What type of figurative language does Poe use to refer to the moon? a.Metaphor b.Hyperbole c.Personification d.Symbolism 2.How does Poe create a somber tone in this poem? a.He describes death. b.He chooses somber words like shroud. c.He makes every other line rhyme. d.He writes in short, choppy rhythm. 3.The following include items to check for when writing a clear and coherent story EXCEPT: a.My story contains correct spelling & punctuation. b.My story has a strong focus, with no unnecessary details. c.My story has an ambiguous plot and point of view. d.My story has descriptive details and conversations that tell about the characters in the story.

3 WARM UP 10-28-2015: WARM UP 10-28-2015: Admiral McRaven’s Life Lesson #4 If you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses. “Life is filled with circuses. You will fail. You will likely fail often. It will be painful. It will be discouraging. At times it will test you to your very core.” When you fail a daily physical training event, the Navy SEALs’ “circus” is having to do two hours more of additional calisthenics — designed to wear you down, to break your spirit, to force you to quit. But that extra training actually can help build strength and stamina if you don’t quit. We all live though our own “circuses” in life, and they can be exhausting, confusing and sometimes downright depressing. Many times, we can glimpse insight and perspective during those trials, if we are looking for them. When you do the extra work, you become stronger, more experienced, and more confident. Doing the minimum is sometimes not enough, so practice the maximum! Go the extra mile. That pivot to a more committed and prepared approach can sometimes be life changing! Write about your “circus” – a skill, a talent, a sport, or an academic class – to which you vow to give your MAXIMUM effort. Give details as to what specifically you plan to do to accomplish your goal.

4 Warm Up 10-29-15 What is now known as Halloween started as a Pagan Celtic holiday called Samhain (sow'-een). Samhain was viewed as a magical holiday that celebrated the end of the year. It was on Oct. 31 because the Celts’ New Year started on Nov. 1. This holiday was believed to be a night when deceased spirits could walk among the living and potentially cause trouble. Celts tried to scare away the bad spirits by wandering around their neighborhood in outlandish masquerades and making a racket. This is how the tradition of wearing Halloween costumes was started. During Samhain, people thought fairies walked from door to door dressed as beggars requesting food. In modern-day society, trick-or- treating is a common practice on Halloween. Children go from door to door hoping to receive delicious treats. A tradition is a ritual or belief passed down within a society. Halloween and its festivities is one example of a tradition. Write about a tradition that your family acknowledges or celebrates. Does it focus on a holiday? How often does it occur. What types of things do you do as part of the tradition? Write ½ page MINIMUM.

5 What is the best costume you ever wore for Halloween? Describe the costume and why you liked it so much. Warm Up 10-30-2015
