Arriving at school We would like your support and assistance each morning lining your child up under the COLA. When the warning bell rings at 9:15am we ask you kiss and cuddle your child goodbye and allow them to walk to their class lines under the COLA independently. That way when the final bell rings at 9:20am, they are lined up with their class teacher ready to begin the day and listen to the day's messages. We ask that you vacate the COLA area, as it can be quite noisy and stand to the side of the walkway. We also ask that you leave a clear passage for two classes at a time to make their way across the road and do not follow your child to the North site. If you require time to speak to your child's teacher in regards to a daily issue or matter, we ask that you go to the office and request an appointment. Teacher will get back to you to arrange a time to meet. After school, teacher has a duty of care to ensure all students go home safely. We ask that you avoid approaching teacher while caring for the students. We are proud of our student's developed independence and we thank you for your support

Food at School Packing Lunches: Please pack a piece of fruit for them to have at fruit break. Please be realistic about the amount of food your child can consume in a day and remember that most children are anxious to play at lunch. Promote independence with eating lunch. Please ensure lunch orders have your child’s name and class written on them with money attached. Lunch orders are placed in the box outside the canteen before school. Birthdays: Please make sure you bring items like cupcakes, as these can be easily distributed. There are no knives on the premises. There are 20 children in each Kindy class. Ask about allergies. We are nut free. Oatley Public School is a nut free school.

Parent Helpers Assisting in the classroom will help you to further understand the learning processes and activities in which your child is involved. Before committing yourself to helping in the classroom, we ask parents to sign a child protection declaration, sign on and off at the visitors register and wear a visitors badge. Younger children cannot accompany you in the classroom. Parents will be invited to help in the classroom at the beginning of Term 2.
10
Best Start and Reporting All best Start testing has been completed. The children were tested in Literacy and Numeracy. The children are tested only once using the Best Start resources. Children are then monitored through class assessments throughout the rest of their schooling. Your written report generated from the individual student results will be available to pick up tonight at the conclusion of this meeting. There will be parent/teacher interviews at the end of Term 1. A written school report will be sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4.

KF’s Student Welfare Rewards: Red Apples Stickers Merit Awards – AP, Principal Consequences: Classroom APPLES: rule reminders, verbal warnings and time out. Yellow and Red Cards Each day is a new day!
14
Merit Awards Class Merit Awards handed out each week based on School Values Homework Awards – handed in on time, completed, 5 times (not necessarily in a row) Superkid Award – No red cards in a term. 4 Awards per term = Assistant Principal Award 3 AP Awards = Principal Award 4 AP Awards = School Medal (Celebrating Success Day) If your child goes on a holiday – keep a holiday journal as this will provide your child with a homework tick ** Awards are kept at school. ** Awards are valid only for the current school year.
15
Whole School Student Welfare Policy The whole school uses a behaviour thermometer. This ensures that students are aware of the consequences of their behaviour if they make the wrong choice. It also ensures consistent teacher judgement in the playground and in individual classrooms. Behaviours are linked to School Values Yellow Cards = Official Warnings (AP involved) Red Cards = Reflection Room (AP involved) There is a reflection room used once a week during lunch time. During this time, students who have received a red card will spend some of their lunch time thinking and writing about their actions. They will also discuss alternative actions if the same situation should arise in the future.

Homework We encourage parents to read to their children each night and when possible for the children to read to the parents. Kindergarten children will receive home readers at some point during term 1. Homework in Kindergarten should only take approximately 10 - 15 minutes per night. Homework is completed weekly. It is handed out on Monday and needs to be returned on Friday. Homework includes 2 sections to be completed including literacy and numeracy.

Notes Please check your child’s bag every afternoon for notes. While we make every effort to make sure notes go in bags, it is ultimately your child’s responsibility to make sure notes make it to their bag and then home to you. If your child is away, notes are to be provided as soon as possible explaining the absence. Permission notes and money are to be handed into the office before school. Concerns I am more than happy to discuss any areas of concern that you have for your child. However due to commitments before and after school, an appointment is usually required.
25
Tips for home Foster independence – Encourage/allow students to pack and carry own bags, teach children to tie shoe- laces and use tissues, encourage problem solving – lost items, finding own bag etc. Writing – practice CORRECT letter formations and pencil grip when writing. Practice writing name. SUPERVISE writing so children don’t rehearse incorrect grip/formation. Read – read to your child everyday. Test comprehension (Predict, Question – Who; What - beginning, middle, end; When; Where; Why). Think aloud to them when answering these questions. Incidental teaching – i.e. shopping, driving, waiting for siblings etc. Sounds, counting, before, after etc
26
I look forward to an exciting year of learning and laughter with you and your child. Welcome to KF! Thank you for your time this evening.
