African American males and the public schools The reason why I wanted to conduct research about this topic is because I myself am I teacher. I not only black males but a lot of kids who are struggling in academics and are not given all the tools they need to be successful. When I was searching for a topic to research on I came across the issues of African American males not receiving the proper education they need to be succesfsul from a very young age and this pushed me to seek research on this subject.

Scholary Research Article 1 “While all lives matter, we cannot ignore the fact that, as this reports once again reveals, Black male students were at the bottom of four-year high school graduation rates in 35 of the 48 states and the District of Columbia where estimates could be projected for the 2012-2013 school year” We need to be more aware of what is going on in our public school systems and the lack of help that is being given to these individuals. Article 2 The perception of black males not wanting to graduate is not true. Most males want to finish school and many also want to be challenged academically. Develop a program to help heighten individuals needs and wants. Article 3 Education can be made fun and motivating! I can give daily/weekly group meetings to check on progress of the individuals involved.

Intervention Make this is a fun program to be a part of. Education is hard and everyone can struggle with academics. That is why I am going to provide an award if all of these individuals complete the goals that they set. Provide daily interventions: Morning, Lunch, Afternoon for students to get help on subjects that they need. Provide weekly meetings with students and look over what they have done and what they still need to accomplish to get to completion of school Provide safe and trusting advisors to help out each student. All fund-raised for awards and ask school district to help out with providing extra hours to teachers who work more time to help with this program.

Resistance I think that I will receive resistance in the beginning because students sometimes thing that getting help is looked down upon. However, with most students wanting to graduate I believe that with the time-frames I’ve given and the ability to keep it private will eliminate the factor of students not wanting to participate. Awards are always great incentives.

Support I would hope that advisors, teachers, and fellow students can provide a great support system for all the students involved. I hope that the school district would support the program and the extra cost that it would need to be able to be funded properly. A few people that I talked to about my program thought that it was a great idea.
7
Change I want my program to help with students understanding that we are there for them. We want to see them achieve and help them in any way that they can. I hope to see a higher graduation rate. I hope to see students excited about the success that they have gotten from the extra time they put in.
