2 V- England’s Colonies A) Two Joint-Stock companies formed in England 1) The PLYMOUTH Company and the LONDON company. 2) The London Company sends 120 men to Virginia to begin a settlement.

3 B) Jamestown, Virginia The first English Settlement in North America

6 C) Jamestown’s Problems 1) They built on the edge of a Swamp. –Poor drinking water –Insects carry disease (MALARIA) –Damp air rots wooden buildings. 2) Most of the settlers were treasure hunters, not settlers. They lacked the needed survival skills.

7 3) No one thought to bring farmers, blacksmiths, or hunters 4) Instead of planting crops and building a solid settlement, the settlers went looking for gold.

8 What was result of this poor planning? 5) Result- One half of the settlers died within one year.

9 D) The colony would not have survived if CAPTIAN JOHN SMITH had not declared MARTIAL LAW. 1) Martial Law- civilians are placed directly under military command and must obey it’s orders.

10 2) Smith declares gold hunting over and puts everyone to work clearing land, planting crops, and preparing for winter. 3) This move saves the colony for the short term but many still die in the harsh winter

11 ` E) A colony needs TWO things to survive and grow. 1) A way to generate income. A Colony needs to make money. 2) A way to attract more settlers. Colonies need fresh bodies to grow. 3) Jamestown solved these two problems by growing--?

12 F) TOBACCO

13 1) The Spanish introduced tobacco to Europe, but they liked the Virginia crop better. 2) Jamestown still struggled to survive but trading tobacco gave it a fighting chance.
