ASTRONAUT ROBOT MISSION SIMULATOR Presenter Corey Casado: Undergraduate Computer Science Major, Japanese Minor Mentors Winslow Burleson: Assistant Professor of Human Computer Interaction, School of Computing and Informatics/ Arts, Media, and Engineering program Uday Kumar Bandaru: Masters Student in Electrical Engineering and Arts, Media and Engineering
2
Problem Allow astronauts to take pre-mission simulations with them on the mission. Obtaining a best case solution to a given scenario efficiently and quickly through the simulator. Exposing students to the types of scenarios that astronauts would be exposed to (Without sending them all to cape Canaveral).
3
Objectives Improve extraterrestrial exploration by Implementing a 3D space simulator that… allows astronauts to run realistic simulations of their mission allows astronauts to input scenarios into a simulator during the mission. have the simulator derive the best course of action from the given scenario.
4
Methods: Delta3D Open Source 3D graphics simulator Originally designed for Military grade training simulations Contains: OpenSceneGraph OpenDynamicsEngine Cal3D OpenAL
5
Results Used to Create Hybrid- Digital Physical system for geological exploration. Used to optimize critical missions parameters through real time geographical simulation and mission dynamics. Physics engine integrated for better simulations in geological surfaces.
6
Significance and Use Significance: By allowing software to derive the best course of action the Astronaut can focus on other more pertinent information. Use: Can be used by astronauts prior to and during the actual mission. Could also be used in classrooms for educational purposes
7
Advantages over previous versions Delta 3D gives the flexibility to add AI to the bots Adds Physics engine for better kinematics and physics simulation Adds environment (dusty/cloudy/rainy) Delta3d maintained by NPS.
8
Conclusion Completed: Implementing physics in a 3D environment Successful Loading of models into the environment Still to Come: Allow control of several different “actors” Have simulation derive best case solution for a given scenario.
