Skill Focus The skill for this week is...... Determine two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including their relationship to supporting ideas; provide an objective summary of the text.

Skill Focus In other words, Be able to find two or more central ideas of the text, determine how the themes develop over time and how they relate to supporting details, and write a summary without using opinions.

Vocabulary Strategy: Word Analysis Under “My Definition,” write the definition for each word. Next, use the word in a sentence. Below “My Definition” under “Synonym” write two words that are similar to the vocabulary word. Finally, under “Antonym” write two words that are opposite.

One man was going to pick two hundred pounds of cotton, and another three hundred. Even the children were promising to bring home fo' bits and six bits. The champion picker of the day before was the hero Anticipatory Set

of the dawn. If he prophesied that the cotton in today's field was going to be sparse and stick to the bolls like glue, every listener would grunt a hearty agreement. The sound of the empty cotton sacks dragging over the floor and the murmurs of waking people were sliced by the cash register as we rang up the five- cent sales. Anticipatory Set

If the morning sounds and smells were touched with the supernatural, the late afternoon had all the features of the normal Arkansas life. In the dying sunlight the people dragged, rather than their empty cotton sacks. Brought back to the Store, the pickers would step out of the backs of trucks and fold down, dirt- disappointed, to the ground. No matter how Anticipatory Set

much they had picked' it wasn't enough. Their wages wouldn't even get them out of debt to my grandmother, not to mention the staggering bill that waited on them at the white commissary downtown. Anticipatory Set

Read the passage. 1. Identify two central ideas of this passage. Textual Evidence The people lift each other’s spirits through boasting about the deeds to be done. Reality is that no matter how well the people do, they will forever be in debt due to the discrepancy in pay and the amount they owe.

The two are inextricable, the people try to start each day positively, leaning on one another to face the day. But, regardless of their actions, they will eventually have to face the fact that they are just unable to get ahead financially. Textual Evidence Read the passage. 2.
