The Constitution Objective: – Identify how the 3 Branches of Government and synthesize the importance of the Constitution Essential Question: – Why do we make plans? – Why is it important to have plans? – Why is it important to have rules? – Are plans more important to some than to others?

Legislative Branch The Legislative Branch Makes the laws. The Legislative Branch is made up of two parts: 1. Senate Duties Include: Approves treaties and presidential appointments My Senators are: Harry Reid (D) & Dean Heller (R) 2. House of Representatives Duties Include: Creates bills, overrides veto's, impeach officials My Representatives are: Joe Heck (R), Mark Amodei (R) & Dina Titus (D) Shared Duties: Create lower courts, remove judges.

Executive Branch The Executive Branch Carries out the laws. The President is in charge of the Executive Branch. The president of the United States is: Barack Obama Duties include: Appoints Supreme Court justices and other federal judges. May veto legislation, call special sessions, recommend legislation, appeal to the people. The Vice President of the United States is: Joe Biden The Executive Branch also includes: Head of Govt., Defence Minister, Interior Minister, Foreign Minister, Finance Minister, Justice Minister Some of their duties include: Prime Minister, Armed Forces, Police Forces, Diplomatic Services, Fiscal Policy, Justice Minister

Judicial Branch The Judicial Branch Interprets the laws. The Chief Justice of the United States is: John G. Roberts Jr. 1. The Supreme Court Duties Include: Interprets the meaning of laws, applies laws to individual cases, decides if laws violate the Constitution. 2. Court of Appeals Duties Include: Determine whether or not laws were applied correctly in the trial court. 3. District Courts Duties Include: Conduct trials for criminal and civil cases. Hear bankruptcy proceedings. sentence convicted criminals. Issue arrest and search warrants.

Review: Bill of Rights Purpose of the Bill of Rights: – The first ten (10) amendments. – Specific protections of individual liberty and justice and place restrictions on the powers of the government. Why these amendments were added to the Constitution. – Expanded individual civil rights. – Fundamental Law / Rights. How they serve to protect individual freedoms while limiting the role of government. – Itemized social contract of democratic philosophy. – The people are to be provided justice, civil peace, common defense, general welfare, and freedom.

Assignment: “It’s My Right!” 4. Rank amendments by placing the cards in order of their importance (based on your group) – Which amendments are more important to your group’s theme? – A teenager may find an order of amendments different then what the U.S. Congress finds important. – Begin with the most important at the top and moving down to the least important. 5. Explain your reasoning. – Group selects a member to report information to the class. – Why is this important to that group? 1. Split into Four Groups: – Teenagers – U.S. Congress – Small Business Owners – Parents / Guardians 2. Cut out the cards and place them face up. 3. Develop a brief definition or example of each amendment and write on the back of the card. – Constitution 172-195. – Use Pages 187-189.

Assessment: Summary & Review 1. Which amendment was the most difficult for your group to associate with? 2. Based on the amendment, how did its ranking differ among representative groups? – How did it differ from your group to theirs?
