Quick Facts ● Jefferson wasn’t sure if the Government had the power to acquire new land, but he couldn’t pass up the opportunity. ● The United States Purchased the Louisiana Territory from France for a total of 15 million dollars. (3 cents/acre)

Why was it important? ● Overnight it doubled the size of the United States. ● Took a European power completely out of the empire game in North America. (France) ● Acquired the port city of New Orleans. Now the United States controlled the entire stretch of the Mississippi River.

Lewis and Clark Expedition ● Jefferson is eager to explore the newly acquired territory and commissions an expedition. ● Meriwether Lewis and William Clark will lead the expedition. ● Jefferson instructed them to carry out scientific studies along the way and document the native cultures they encountered. ● The trip took 2 years and 4 months and was a great success.

What did the expedition accomplish? 1. Brought back valuable information about the West and showed that transcontinental travel was possible. 2) It pointed the way for settlers to the West and strengthened US claims to the North West. 3) Contributed to the success of Jefferson’s first term in office.
