Wells Black teacher Helped form National Association of Colored Women Raised money to help educate black women Carrie Chapman Catt Joined National Woman Suffrage Association Wanted right to vote, in both state and national government

Alice Paul Social activist Used more extreme strategies to win the right to vote National Woman’s Party Paul formed this party Protest marches First group to march with picket signs outside the white house Some went on hunger strikes Refusing to eat until they could vote Angered many including other women’s movements

Nineteenth Amendment The right to vote “shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex.” With the NWP and NAWSA Both parties can take responsibility for the victory Convinced legislators to support suffrage movement
